Well worth the read. This article by Tai Moses covers the bases including why some people are compelled to play with fire, a quick note about the history of poi, a bit of safety information, and finally whether the fire or the dancer is in control. What do you think?

(As an aside, there's a bit of this article that touches on this recurring theme of concern about the sanctity of fire dancing, and my personal opinion is that anything interesting is bound to be interesting to groups of people who find each other uninteresting, if you know what I mean.)
